Camera Lesson

The first thing we had to do in the camera lesson, was to get out the tripod and set it up. We firstly has to carefully take it out the bag an then open it. Once this was done we unlocked all of the legs, held the head of the tripod and adjusted it to the height at which we wanted it.  Then we put on the handle.
After this we had to set up the camera on to the tripod, this involved sliding it into a gap carefully and then locking it into place so it didn't slip out. Also as the camera is top heavy we had to be very careful that we locked it or it could easily just fall off. Then we had to bubble the camera, which ensures that it is central.
The camera that we used was called the sony NX5
During the lesson we learned to use all of its functions, varying from brightness and focus to white balance.
After learning all about the camera we got to use it, this involved shooting some shots, in the groups i worked in, our acting was done by Lauren and Igor, and then Kingsley.

With the help of the teachers we consolidated our knowledge on the 180 degrees rule, with the use of a toy Ferrari.

We also used a monitor to play back our shots and see what they looked like all together.
Overall the lesson was really beneficial as it showed us the overview of how to use the camera. I enjoyed it as now i feel as if i can use the camera and would be able to film decently.

Opening title sequence- Sexy Beast

  • Light hearted and sassy music, fairly upbeat.
  • Throughout the sequence we meet three characters. From this we deduce one is the main character, the female could be his wife or girlfriend and then the little child is like a slave.
  • From the main characters actions and appearance we can guess that he is fairly rich but also quite rude.
  • The tan, gold chain and suggest that he is mafia.
  • The film is set in Spain.
  • When the rock nearly hits him, he seems very relaxed, implies that things like this have happened to him before.
  • His house is in the middle of nowhere, maybe he is hiding and staying out of trouble.
  • The woman could be heading towards him which creates question such as, why and who.
  • We see that Ray Winston is the main character.
  • Love hearts in the bottom of the pool then it cuts to woman in the car, strengthening the idea that maybe she is a girlfriend or wife.

Opening title sequence- The shining

  • The music is very eerie and creates a creepy tone. Heavy and slow base, use of wailing sounds makes it uncomfortable to listen to.
  • The music contrasts with the beautiful scenery, the music makes the scenery less nice, creates a feeling of isolation, shows that music can change perception.
  • Warner brothers film, also the credits are central and move from bottom to the top of the screen, this ensures that we see them as they are the main focus on the screen. Also the fact that they were in a large blue font makes them more easy to the eye.
  • Just seeing the car driving in the middle of nowhere makes us ask questions. For example: Who is in the car? Where are they going?
  • Also from just the opening sequence we can deduce that the genre of the film is horror/thriller.
  • As the car is driving the roads get slowly smaller until it reaches the destination, which looks like some sort of hotel.
  • Throughout the sequence the shot duration is kept long then it cuts to a different environment.

Scene analysis

My scene is the opening from the James bond casino royale, as its long i have only analyzed the first two minutes of the scene. This scene is one of the best openings to most films i have senen, definitley the best out of all of the Bond films.

  • Firstly i like this scene as it goes straight into the action, there is no long, boring opening sequence.
  • As soon as the chase begins we get a shot reverse shot of Daniel Craig as he jumps over the fence. Then goes to point of view (POV) of the enemy running away.
  • Then the camera tilts and we get an overview of the whole set.
  • Goes to close up of enemy, the POV of him looking for James Bond.
  • Slow mo of truck smashing through the fence, then POV of Bond scouting for the enemy.
  • Constant crane shot gives us a complete overview of scene, and allows us to see everything that is happening.
  • It cuts about evey three seconds so we can see evrything that is going on.
  • Every now and then there is a two shot, which allows us to see how close the men are in comparison to each other.
  • The explosion could foreshadow later events to happen in the film.
  • constant change of camera angles allows us to have an overview of the situation.

Introduction

Hi, I'm Tyler, this is my AS media studies blog and it will show you what you need to know about my work over this course. I was born in England, London and lived there until the end of year 7, after this I moved out to Singapore. I went to Tanglin trust school, which was a British school, so we were taught via the British curriculum. Film studies was offered as a GCSE, however I chose not to do it. Hurtwood offered media studies so I decided to take it as it had always interested me. I have no preference of what films I watch, but a few actors that I enjoy watching include people such as Vince Vaughn, Adam Sandler, Owen Wilson, De Caprio, Jeff Buckley and others. In my free time I enjoy playing football and other sports, living in Singapore allowed me to swim a fair bit. I like to listen to a large range music, ranging from chart music to house music. My favourite film would have to be fight club. I also like to DJ
