Saul Bass

Saul Bass

Saul Bass was born in New York City in 1920 and is a thoroughly acclaimed graphic designer with a career of 40 years. He died on April 25th 1996 in LA. He studied in New York at the Art Students’ League as a teenager and developed a unique style of graphic design.  Bass is renowned for his use of simple shapes .The shapes that Bass drew, in things such as logos that he made, were usually hand drawn which created a casual appearance. He designed logos such as Quaker oats and AT&T, both of which have however been edited since. In my opinion all of the logos that he designed are very simple, for example Kose Cosmetics is just two blue rectangles, one slightly tilted and leaning of the other, this is the epitome of simple. Also over his career He designed titles for over 30 films and he won an academy award for his short film Why Man Creates.

 CASINO

In this opening title sequence is brilliant as he uses a very well known actor to open the scene, then within seconds we see him in his car and it blows up, this straight away pulls us straight into the scene. Furthermore the use of the many flashing lights and bright colors, further draws us into this scene. Now we know that these lights were filmed in a real casino, thus linking cleverly with the title of the Film.

Here you can watch the opening title sequence of the movie casino that Saul Bass created himself with his array of graphic designing skills.
